Optoma projectors incorporate DLP® technology from Texas Instruments, which creates razor sharp pictures and amazing videos with incredible colours and brightness, while providing world class reliability and longevity.

DLP®

DLP® Technology by Texas Instruments

What is DLP®?

DLP® is a technology developed by Texas Instruments that has revolutionised projection. It stands for 'Digital Light Processing'. At the heart of every Optoma projector is a DLP® chip.
This chip can have up to two million microscopic mirrors, each measuring less than one-fifth the width of a human hair and corresponds to one pixel on the final projected image.

How does DLP® work?

When combined with a light source and a projection lens, each mirror on a DLP® chip can tilt either toward the light source or away from it, making the pixel become white or black.
DLP®
The image processing circuits in the projector can tell each mirror to switch on and off several thousand times a second. This allows us to display 1024 different shades of grey for an incredibly smooth image, by varying how often the mirror is displaying white.
What about displaying colour?
  • On lamp-based models, alternating red, green and blue filters are placed between the light source and the DLP® chip.
  • On LED-based models, separate red, green and blue LED arrays illuminate the DLP® chip one after the other.
The mirrors are then turned on and off perfectly in time with the right colour - this allows us to display a total of 16.7 million different colours creating a fantastically vibrant, life-like picture.

Why choose DLP®?

DLP®
Video and graphics produced by the latest DLP® technology are sharper because the mirrors on the DLP® chip are so close together that the gaps between pixels in an image are less noticable. Spaced less than one micron apart, its mirrors create a smooth film-like image.
As DLP® is a reflective technology, it can deliver images with both high native ANSI contrast and exceptional brightness, creating a picture so real and seamless that it's easy to forget that you aren't in the action.
DLP®
The inherent speed of DLP® technology means that Optoma projectors can output video and images at an astonishing rate of 120Hz, allowing you to show full screen, full colour, stereoscopic 3D.
Optoma are so confident that DLP® image colour quality will remain as good as the day you bought it that we will guarantee it for five years.
