Let there be light...
Russell Brodie , Scotland . Purchased from Amazon.co.uk
And there was light. And it was good. In fact, it was very good indeed !
This is my first projector and unusually I took the risk of buying it with no reviews posted - I'm so pleased I did. If you are on the cusp of getting one... then just do it. You only live once and its well worth the money. It'll blow you away.
It was either this or the BenQ W1070. I went for the Optoma because the throw characteristics better suited my room setup and because of the many good reviews for the previous model - the HD131xe.
I'm using a 106" glass bead screen (16:9) 3.8m from the projector, which is ceiling mounted - it fills the screen perfectly with no zoom.
Whats in the box? Very brightly backlit (blue) remote, 2xAAA batteries, UK plug, European plug, quick start page + manual on disc, projector. There is no HDMI cable. There is no lens cover.
Whats the build quality like? Good enough. Its much lighter than I thought it would be - only ~2.4kg. Its about the size of a regular breakfast cereal box. Its piano black on top (protected with a peelable film) and whilst it looks good overall it is a wee bit on the plasticky side. That said it really is a non issue if you are ceiling mounting ('cos you'll only see the good side and its beyond close up scrutiny). The focus wheel feels precise, but the zoom lever feels a bit vague.
Is the fan noisy? No. But you will hear a very gentle whir in quiet parts of a film - its there if you want to really concentrate on hearing it. Don't let that put you off - you'll be immersed in other sensory things ! The very first film I played was Saving Private Ryan - I actually worried that the fan wasn't working during the landing craft opening scene (which has brilliant sound effects) - I just couldn't hear it at all, even with my ear right next to the projector.
Does it run hot? Yup - as you would expect its like a regular little fan heater when up to temperature. There's a bit of light leakage on the right hand side - but nothing to worry about.
Is it easy to ceiling mount? Yes. I bought a fairly standard extendable mount from an online site. It has 3 screw holes on the base that take screws that are like electric machine screws for holding sockets on the wall. Its so light that I don't think you'd have issues fixing it to a ceiling with hollow anchors. One point to note is that the HDMI/Power connections are on the side ( left if you are behind it and its table mounted or right it you are behind and its ceiling mounted).
Now what about the important part - the 2D picture quality? Well, I was stunned. My wife was stunned (she never gets excited by tech). She just loved watching The Holiday in glorious 106" full HD. I didn't mind seeing Cameron Diaz this way either! You will never want to watch a movie on anything less after you have experienced this!
Despicable Me 2 was what I used for a colour definition test - its just amazing on Bluray.
I've not tried 3D yet - a few pairs of glasses will be something I'll save up for next, and I'll update once I've trialed that.
Just to state the obvious - if you use the projector in anything other than a reasonably dark room, the picture will look washed out - so don't go thinking that you can use it in any lighting conditions. I hate the dark nights in Scotland from October to March, but this year ... bring them on! I'm so fired up to watch a whole host of movies all over again in big screen format at home this winter.
I hope you get one and enjoy as much as I do.
Can't fault it...
Gary Templeman, Lincoln, UK. Purchased from Richer Sounds
What a great projector (and at such a good price)! It has handled everything I've thrown at it amazingly well...it works very well in daylight, but excels when you turn the lights down. I've even used it to project onto the wall of our warehouse to see how big it would go - the image was crystal clear and four and a half metres wide (I ran our of wall!).
Top notch projector from a very friendly and helpful company.
Mark MacInnes, Nottingham. Purchased from Amazon
I've been using this project for nearly 3 weeks and I am extremely happy with it. My main use is for video gaming but I also use it for TV and occasionally films. It is used in a long living room projected onto a wall. There is some light coming into the room.
It projects a strong image with good colours. I haven't spent much time tweaking the image so I imagine it could be made better but I haven't felt the need to change any but the basic settings. I have used it during the day with a moderate level of light through the curtains. At times it struggled but was satisfactory, however the curtains are thin so that is more my fault.
Setup was extremely easy (connect, turn on, watch).
I have watched one 3D movie with it. This worked very well.
Overall I would definitely recommend this projector.
I am satisfied
Tamas Kovacs, Cheswardine, Shropshire. Purchased from Currys
this is my first projector, I am impressed. Colors are brilliant, full HD is beautiful, easy setup, easy to navigate in the menu, the picture at daylight is really good, bright, not faded.
Sarah Philip, North Lanarkshire. Purchased from currys
Bought mainly for movies but also gaming (when we get time nowadays.) Had tossed up between lcd and bulb projectors but too much evidence said that current lcds weren't as bright as new bulbs.-My old (bulb) projector had to have complete darkness to be seen but this one is perfectly visible in the room light-much to the delight of my 3yo now he can see to play with his movie toys whilst watching said movie. Not too much experience with games yet but very impressed after quick shot just to check everything working. Well worth every penny!!
Unbelievable Value for Money
Simon Huggins, Leeds, West Yorkshire. Purchased from Richer Sounds
I did a lot of research as this was my first foray into projection. Optoma became the logical choice, all things considered.Well my TV is now just a dust collector. The quality of the picture is truly awesome , we are all blown away, full hd , 3d , this does it all . very easy to set up, with all the options you need to achieve the best picture. I will never again waste my hard earned, on a TV.
I also purchased the ZF2001 System (3D Glasses + Receiver kit) , a perfect match.
You won't be disappointed.
Optoma , now need to make an Anomorphic Lens for the HD141X to make my dreams come true,
( sounding nerdy now )I'm going to send a letter to santa !!!
This is my best investment in home entertainment to date, it could be yours too !!!
Amazing quality for such a good price
kris Butler, United Kingdom. Purchased from EBUYER
I made the decision to change from my 42" plasma screen to projector an I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I was initially apprehensive as I thought there would be a dramatic reduction of picture quality but this is far from the case. My plasma TV is in another room and feels so small now.
Fantastic projectors improving all the time
Patrick Hutton, Crowborough, UK. Purchased from Amazon
3 years ago I bought what was a ground breaking 3D projector in the HD300X. It's a truly awesome projector and Optoma are way ahead of the competition. Having now purchased the HD141X in addition I can say they are still on the move - it's brighter, half the size and weight, two thirds the cost and compatible with the accessories I already purchased - it's fantastic!
Jakub Antoszczyk, . Purchased from richer sound
ABsolutley amazing Life of equipment .Love it from First sight. Powerfull and precise lamp gives gives hudge fun With full hd footage.my dream become reality
Gareth Thomas, Bridgend, South Wales. Purchased from Currys
Amazing projector, I am projecting onto a 80" screen, full 1080p amazing clarity, really deep blacks, great contrast, colours are brilliant. Not had a go of the 3d yet. The projector is easy to set up with lots of options to adjust height of projection, size, keystone correction etc. It is like having our own private cinema, couldn't be happier with purchase
Paul, Belfast. Purchased from Richie Sounds Belfast
I was going to buy a normal tv but took a chance on this projector and boy am I glad that I did. The same, if not better quality than my LED tv but obviously massive (currently at 100") Without a dought the best purchase that I have made !
Excellent picture and 3D
Robert Astbury, Manchester, UK. Purchased from Amazon
Upgraded from Optoma HD600x after 3 years of solid performance.
great price made the upgrade very cheap on the pocket, with 3D features built in and bulb life up to 6000 hours (compared to HD600X's 4000 hours) this will hopefully do me well for another 5 years.
One downside, is that the ambient fan noise level is higher than the HD600x ever was, so noticeable when no audio is being played, but this is fine when playing a film or tv shows.
Budget price: Premium performance
Adrian Wathes, Nuneaton, United Kingdom. Purchased from Amazon UK
Superb projector for the price. Displays whatever source I throw at it - Blu Rays, DVDs, PS3 / PS4, Sky TV - nothing has phased it so far and my friends are impressed with the quality. For those who need to know, I have mine ceiling mounted around 5 metres from the opposite wall, which gives an image of around 4 foot high by around 7 foot wide - perfect for any type of viewing. Just buy one...
Excellent just like being at the cinema!!!!!
jason, uk. Purchased from amazon
After researching various projectors online i decided on the Optoma HD141x.
wow!! i could not be more impressed, the picture is amazing i`ve now got a 100" screen all in full 1080p full HD, and all for just £400.
oh and it`s a 3d projector as well (glasses are still on order) but i know when they arrive im in for a treat.
It makes me wonder why anyone would bother with a large screen tv. considering an 80" Led Tv would be several thousand pounds; why would you, when you can have any size screen you want with a projector?
If your considering buying this projector hesitate no longer, its well worth the money and puts my old 50" plasma to shame!
Madio , England. Purchased from Amazon
Epic projector very good for picture quality
Does what it says on the tin
Andrew Latham, London. Purchased from Richer Sounds
The projector is a winner!
It is compact, light, bright, easy to use, stylish, great value for money and the image is superb!
Marcin Pustowar, Dublin, Ireland. Purchased from www.amazon.co.uk
Amazing product. Perfect picture, very good quality.
The best decision :)
Zsolt Szanto, United Kingdom. Purchased from Amazon
Before I had another Optoma projector which was support the HD and the maximal resolution was 1600 x 1200. After I compared with my LCD TV, I thought that picture quality is good. But as time goes by, I started to miss the 3D movies and the Full HD. So upgraded to this projector and I can tell, this was the best decision of my life. The image quality is sharp and clear and the color is so bright as an LCD TV.
Now every night I can make my own cinema in my room.
Richard Phelps, Thornbury, UK. Purchased from Amazon
Purchased this to upgrade from a HD600x + 3DXL.
Great picture. Quicker and quieter than the HD600x. Very impressed.
Home Cinema Projector
Matthew Newell, Wolverhampton. Purchased from PC World Guildford
This was bought as a portable projector to deliver presentations and to show films while away from home. Features are 1080p, 3D, a remote which illuminates and a built in 10w speaker.
Fantastic Value and performance
Chris Norman, Lancaster, England.. Purchased from Richer Sounds
I chose this projector as it had faetures of projectors twice its price and the Richer Sounds manager recomended it as he had one (always trust their advice;-0). It was increadably easy to set up and the quality is exceptional. Even in a room with the curtains open the picture is fantastic. My wife was concerned that it would have a noisy fan and be a grainy picture but was needlessly concerned! The 10w speaker is good but benefits from being hooked up to a surround sound set up. 5 Star product!
Amazing product with 3 small things to improve on
Alan Manning, Christchurch. Purchased from Amazon
I love this projector, I brought it as a home cinema solution and it works brilliantly, there is a wide range of settings and controls so you can put it almost anywhere are get the image perfectly rectangular and not skewed. Also you can flip the image it produces backward forward upside down and any other way so you can mount it on the ceiling like me or anywhere else. It is a massively bright bulb and I can still watch it mid-day in my conservatory which has a glass roof so I get all the sun yet still can see it fine. I like the fact it also does 3d and 2d, I can easily swap between the 2 by changing the source. This also has good speakers in it so I don’t need to faf on with connecting a wire back to the speakers leaving cables all across the room, this means peoples aren’t going to trip and knock the projector over by snagging the cable. There are 3 things I would improve; the first thing is very minor and is the fact the blue backlight in the remote is quite bright and means I’m blinded and can’t see the buttons its illuminating neglecting its purpose. The second this is the fact that the speakers don’t have fine enough increments to it, it’s either a bit too loud on 5 or a bit too quiet on 4, more scale please. and lastly the focus wheel spins a bit to freely so when you as much as touch the wheel you can knock it out of focus (this may just be my model though, not to sure). Hope this review helps anybody. Thank you for reading.
Michael Harvey, East Farleigh. Purchased from Richer Sounds
I have only watched 2 movies so far and am awaiting glasses to try 3D but this projector is far beyond others I have seen, from the office work horse to a slightly older one owned by a family member.
The picture is clear even directly on a wall (no screen as yet either).
Perfect for the home as well as a film club
Garry Hitchens, Cornwall. Purchased from Costco.co.uk
I originally purchased this projector to get a film club set up in my local village. My intention was to upgrade the projector at a later date, somewhat weary that a relatively cheap projector might not be man enough in the long term. However, on receiving the HD141X and testing it in the hall the club will be held in, I don't think an upgrade will be needed.
The picture quality is excellent, even when the projected picture size was in excess of 100". This was based on the how the projector was set up as it was taken out of the box. With some fiddling on the settings, I'm sure you could get the picture looking even better, but that would be more for those who really notice that kind of thing. I was surprised at how the picture quality seemed to be even better than a standard TV.
Inputs/outputs are somewhat limited, but this shouldn't be a problem if you have a decent set up. I have all of my devices being fed into an AV receiver, and then the receiver feeds the projector. It works a treat, and works just as well as my TV. I've gone to the extent of connecting my PC to the other HDMI input, so I can use the projector as an additional monitor to show films and TV shows easily.
The 3D works well also. I was starting to go off 3D on my TV, as it made the picture blurry at times and difficult to watch. However, in purchasing a £18 set of DLP-enabled 3D glasses I gave it a go and was pleasantly surprised by the improvement. There is some noticeable flickering surrounding the picture if you choose to focus on it - I'm not sure if this is something that can be fixed with more pricey glasses or a different 3D mode.
My original intention was to use this for the film club, occasionally using it at home. However, the increase in picture quality from my TV (as well as the obvious fact you can get a bigger picture from the projector), I have now made the effort to set it up at home and now use it regularly to play videos games and watch films on a 70" screen (limited by the room and screen size unfortunately). You get a surprising amount of picture resizing and moving tools, including a few zoom options (one on the projector itself, one through the menu) and a picture repositioning tool. Do still heed the Optoma throw distance charts though, as these tools obviously only go so far. All in all, a great, affordable projector. If room permits, people should definitely settle for a projector rather than a TV and this is a good one to go for.
nice projector needs more clever MODERN DAY inputs
Mr gary swain, portsmoith. Purchased from richer sounds southapmton
i have just bought the optoma HD141X
and its very good picture and works in lite rooms very well
but it lacks inputs for modern day devices ..
such as an external hard disk or the use of wifi to connect every other product in the house that has wifi ..
most people now would be storing movies on hard drives and photos
and still (2015) there knocking out projectors without this included ?
you can buy an extra wireless adapter for £200 but this should be already installed as standard in 2015
i had an epsom projector 12 years ago and i thought things would have moved on my now - but no - still leads everywhere
so over all this projector is amazing (picture wise) but it lacks a modern day adapters - the shop guy was most impressed it had hdmi adapters - like they just came out yesterday
not sure i win the completion with this review but its the truth and its how I'm feeling looking at the many leads drapping from the projector
Good home cinema projector
Guy, Weston-super-mare. Purchased from PC-World
Am using projector against a white wall and the results are impressive. Projector is placed about 12ft from the wall and is generating a 100 inch (diag) image.
A little bit of fan noise but not noticeable when a film is playing. the speaker is surprisingly good.
Film / projector buffs may pick fault with the blacks and how the projector struggles in ambient light - for me it is fine - black out the windows grab a drink and settle down for a great night in!
Steve Parker, UK. Purchased from Amazon
Bought the Optoma HD141X DLP Projector for my 50th Birthday Present as I've always wanted to set up a Home Cinema setup.
The projector was on very special offer for Amazon Prime customers so the price was great. There was also an Epson Projector at the same price, but the Optoma model was brighter, had more features and better reviews.
Setup was extremely easy and in 5 mins the projector was connected to my Laptop and I was viewing some favourite scenes from by Blinkbox/Ultraviolet collection.
The built in speaker was plenty loud enough and the quality was great although for my permanent setup I plan to get a Bluetooth transmitter and use a pair or connected Bluetooth speakers for that Cinema experience.
One feature I hope to use in the future is the 12V relay output which will connect to a powered screen so that when the projector turns on the Screen will lower and then retract when the projector is powered off.
All I need now is a big tub of popcorn and I'm good to go.
Peter Venn, Sheffield, UK. Purchased from amazon.co.uk
It was the excellent reviews about this projector that really sold it for me. I was not disappointed. The image quality is fantastic, and the sound quality was a nice surprise too - perfect for home cinema entertainment. Our movies and dramas are a whole new experience.
An excellent projector
Adam Jefferson, Milton Keynes. Purchased from Amazon
A great projector at a good price. It feels solid and well built, and the picture is bright and extremely well-defined. The picture is slightly smaller at its maximum size than my previous projector (Hitachi PJ-TX200) and it's a little noisier but neither of these is a major issue.
Great projector for movies

I just unboxed my Optoma HD141X and I was blown away by the amazing 1080p picture quality. Its my first home projector and I am very happy with my purchase. I used it to play FIFA14 on xbox, played HD and 4k movies. It did not disappoint me even with the ambient lighting ON. Its just been a day and I will post another review if anything about the projector changes.
Georgia Stevens, Bristol : United Kingdom. Purchased from Amazon
Great projector at a great price. I'm currently using it on a yellowish textured wall and I'm so impressed by the quality of the picture even on the wall. It is not noisy, not to me at least. Been using it mostly with my PS4, so much more immersive playing games on a 95" screen (projector around 3m away from wall). Will invest in a proper screen at some point, but for now i am very happy with it. Was hesitant to buy it at first, but I'm glad i did!!
Home Theatre Heaven
Craig Scott , Swindon : United Kingdom. Purchased from PC WORLD
Have always wanted to take the plunge into the world of projectors since getting into home theatre more than 10 years ago. Well the good lady and myself decided to treat ourselves this Christmas and oh my god how happy am I.
What can I say, the HD141X was a doddle to set up, mount it within the appropriate distance for my screen, level off, adjust focus accordingly and boom, 72 inch viewing just like that. Well impressed with the image from bluray with standard cinema setting on the projector plus the fact its wireless hdmi thanks to the whd200. Thanks optoma, the whole family are looking forward to reviewing the whole movie collection.
Dennis Hillier, BRISTOL : United Kingdom. Purchased from currys/pc world
This projector is so good,it is stylish and is suitable for any room .The picture clarity even on extra wide screen has to be seen to be believed! There is no distortion not even at the edges. The colour tuning is fantastic and you can make the black unbelievable(not an insipid black).Only one small niggle and that the instruction manual/dvd doesn't explain how to flip the picture if you are using a ceiling mount,i phoned optoma's U.K office and had great help and sorted this problem in about 5mins.Very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this model to anyone who wants to buy a projector.
Ray, United Kingdom. Purchased from Richer sounds
It is a great product.

Value for Money... Fully packed features for an affordable price. Flawless menu interface and customisable start logo. Fast startup time. Bright projection even with a window backdrop. Highly recommended
Hasan Ozkan , Sheffield . Purchased from Currys
It is a good product.
Beyond Value for money, just 2 issues
Kevin Chessman, London, UK. Purchased from Currys PC World
Excellent, bright image (even in daytime) and vivid colours and exceptional contrast. Very good value for money, especially if you are purchasing whilst the projector is on offer.
Only 2 issues; bulky size (Optoma should remove the speakers to free up space and weight) as ultimately you will be using your own sound system.
Second issue is the fan noise .... I purchased my first Optoma projector in 2007 and was hoping the late 2014 models would have been fitted with a more silent fan.
Excluding these 2 issues, this is an A Class projector.
Ramez, Aberdeen. Purchased from Richer Sounds
Good specs and reasonable value when on offer. Slightly disappointed with the 3D feature requiring purchasing extra accessories.
Alan McCormick, Chatham, Kent. Purchased from Richer Sounds Maidstone
I decided to buy the Optoma HD141X after thinking about getting a projector for a couple of years. To be honest I am glad I waited because this projector is just stunning and provides a fantastic output straight out of the box.
1. Great image straight out of the box - did not need the PDF manual supplied.
2 Infinite adjustments available for those videophile guys'n gals (I may tweak as time goes on but happy at the moment).
3. Small footprint and very light if you want to go mobile.
4. Check your own individual throw distance but this projector works fine for me in my lounge on a 92" Optoma screen.
5. Will work fine on a plain wall if needed - before installing the Optoma 92" screen I projected on to vertical beige blinds and that was acceptable in the dark.
5. Nice looking projector.
1. Would prefer to have a lens cover supplied as you do not get one.
2. Nothing else
perfect for our basement home theater
Tim Richter, New York. Purchased from online electronics vendor
We have converted a portion of our basement into a gaming/movie room. We mounted the HD141X on the ceiling and project directly on the wall. The resulting image is about 4' x 8' which makes about a 9' diagonal picture! Granted we're in the basement away from any sunlight, but the picture is awesome. Combined with surround sound, the theater experience is terrific. Movies and video games will never be the same.
I would have given 5 stars if the blacks were more black, but no one notices until you give them something to compare to when all of the lights are out. Highly recommended.
Could be better
Brian KIng, Swindon, UK. Purchased from PC World
Spend £500 on a projector, they don't even give you a carry case. Also, CD for the User's Guide was warped and would not run in my PC!
would be 5 star but
Richard Dawe, devon. Purchased from pc world
I would have loved to give a 5 star review but have found the 3d very confusing due to the dlp of rf and the price of glasses. But the main gripe I have is with the usb as advertised even on the optoma website as being smart phone link. but this has no use what so ever, might as well not be there
